Six things you need to do when you wake up

Have you ever wondered if it is possible to improve your daily performance?

I’m going to share six methods which will allow you to prepare yourself before you let the world in. They will allow you to optimise your body and mind from the minute you wake up.

If you aren’t doing these things you are not doing yourself justice.

Our bodies love routine. Especially pre and post sleep routines. I am going to let you in on the secrets that will allow you to unlock your potential.

When you first wake in the morning your brain is very susceptible to external influences. The subconscious part of our brain is most active in the first 30 minutes of the day. And so it is this first 30 minutes we will be evaluating before we discover our new habits.

Your world is precious. It is yours to enjoy and yours to take care of.
Here’s how is starts:

You wake up.

Problem one

If you are rolling over smacking your alarm off and then plunging straight into the depths of social media – you are not doing yourself justice.

Solution one

Hit your alarm off or snooze, but only once if you really need it. Begin a mental count down from ten to one. Get yourself up and out of bed before five. Great, step one complete. Oh, and do not, I repeat do not unlock your phone and check emails or social media. Get up and out of bed.

Problem two

If you are not opening your blinds and windows within 30 minutes of waking up – you are not doing yourself justice.

Solution two

Open your blinds or curtains, let the sunlight in… or maybe just light as there isn’t much sun if you are in Scotland. This is critical as the body will react to the natural light of day and kick-start your mind.

Problem three

If you are not drinking one glass of water within the first 30 minutes of waking up – you are not doing yourself justice.

Solution three

Consume one glass of water. You have been sleeping and sweating all night believe it or not. It may have been seven or eight hours since you last consumed water. Get it down the hatch. Rehydrate the body.

Problem four

If you are not getting dressed and washed within the first 30 minutes of waking up – you are not doing yourself justice.

Solution four

You have momentum now. Keep it going. Wash the face, shower, teeth, and get dressed. Step four complete you are almost ready to face the world.

Problem five

If you are not exercising, even a five minute walk, within the first 30 minutes of waking up – you are not doing yourself justice.

Solution five

My personal favourite. This one has the biggest impact. Physical activity. Get moving. It may be just five minutes walking, stretching, running, or even a wee boogie to some music as you get changed. Whatever you like. This will increase blood flow around the body and will awaken the remaining parts of your sleepy brain. This step is flexible with step four. There’s no point in getting all sweaty after you have washed!

Problem six

If you are not having a coffee within the first 30 minutes of waking up – you are missing out…

Solution six

Ok this one isn’t entirely true, it’s personal preference! This is for the coffee lovers. Do what you got to do. Double espresso for me.

Ok.

Now you are ready to face the world.

You are awake, stimulated, the mind is clear, and you are composed.

Switch on your devices and welcome the world in.
